Denis G. Murphy

Denis G. Murphy, Member of the Firm, primarily concentrates his practice in the representation of municipalities and other public entities. Mr. Murphy also has a major focus on election law and campaign finance. He serves as a general counsel as well as special counsel to public entities wherein he regularly provides legal advice, conducts training seminars as well as defends the public entities in all aspects of litigation.

Relevant Experience

Mr. Murphy is the head of the Municipal, Regulatory and Personal Injury Defense Group and has specialized in the representation of entities for the entire period of his admission (excepting his judicial clerkship).  Mr. Murphy has extensive experience in the defense of civil rights claims of all kinds, Title 59 defense, Open Public Records Act (OPRA) issues, Open Public Meeting Act (OPMA) issues, election and campaign finance matters, planning and zoning matters and specialized litigation going to the proper exercise of governmental authority.  He has successfully litigated these types of matters in both the state and federal courts of New Jersey, as well as before the New Jersey Office of Administrative Law.

Mr. Murphy currently serves as General Counsel and Special Counsel to both municipalities large and small, urban and suburban.

Mr. Murphy has also lectured on such topics as Local Government Ethics, Pay to Play and Campaign Finance and Election Law.

Mr. Murphy was featured in the New Jersey Rising Stars “Super Lawyer” publication for his work in the area of general litigation.

As legal counsel to different public entities, he provides advice and counsel on a daily basis designed to avoid legal problems while safeguarding the client’s legal rights. In addition, Mr. Murphy has also assisted numerous candidates for public office with election law and campaign finance issues.
